In October 2022, the Observatory Improvement District (OBSID) asked Local South for a proposal to enhance pedestrian access and overall mobility on Lower Main Road. The “Open Obs!” project was developed to make the area more pedestrian-friendly and appealing. Initially, the plan involved temporary road closures, but due to permit challenges, the focus shifted to long-term street improvements without closures. Local South created a parklet to be used as a test intervention, with plans to later propose changes to traffic flow, parking, and pedestrianisation.
Based on a traffic impact assessment, Local South developed a proposal for OBSID to use in its discussions with the City of Cape Town to improve mobility in the neighbourhood. Download the proposal here.
